Piazza Plebiscito hosts the 1898 fountain, the church of San Giovanni Battista and Palazzo De Petra, home to the Pinacoteca Patiniana. In the ancient core of Castel di Sangro is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the most important in the town. The Museo Civico Aufidenate, in the Maddalena convent, preserves important archaeological finds, including the famous “Toro Sannita”.

Lake Barrea - 37 KM

Lake Barrea, created by damming the Sangro River, is surrounded by the villages of Barrea, Civitella Alfedena and Villetta Barrea, custodians of the authentic Apennine atmosphere. In Barrea there is the ancient Benedictine monastery, the Church of S. Tommaso and the medieval Tower, as well as the Rapaci Centre, perfect for admiring the Foce gorges. Villetta Barrea boasts 16th-century houses and historic churches. The lake is also a starting point for excursions to discover the fauna of the Abruzzo National Park.

Scanno - 60 KM

From the it is easy to reach Scanno, a renowned tourist destination in the Sagittario Valley, immortalized by photographers such as Cartier-Bresson. Its symbol is the Church of S. Maria della Valle, with furnishings by masters of Pescocostanzo and Raiano. Among the other sacred buildings stand out S. Eustachio, S. Maria delle Grazie and S. Antonio da Padova, with 18th-century frescoes. Just outside the village, the Church of the Madonna del Lago is reflected in the waters that bear the name of Scanno.

Pescasseroli - 53 KM

Founded by the Peligni as Pesculum Seroli, Pescasseroli is located in the upper Sangro Valley, the heart of the Abruzzo National Park. Staying at the means being a stone's throw from uncontaminated nature, among bears, wolves and chamois. The village retains its ancient structure and is home to Palazzo Sipari, the birthplace of Benedetto Croce.

GROTTE DEL CAVALLONE

In Abruzzo, near the Majella, there is the suggestive Grotta del Cavallone, a karst cave over 2 km long. You can access it by climbing 174 steps carved into the rock, to then explore spectacular environments with stalactites, stalagmites and formations with curious names. GORGES OF SAN MARTINO

Among the natural wonders of Abruzzo are the Gorges of San Martino, at the entrance to one of the longest valleys of the Apennines. Two imposing rock faces, from 2 to 50 meters wide, create a fascinating and legendary landscape: it is said that they were opened by San Martino with his elbows to allow the people of Farese to reach the mountain.
